The wonders of stone

Stone is a highly versatile natural resource with many qualities. This makes it suitable for a wide range of domestic and commercial applications. Our stonemasons work with reconstituted stone because it has colour consistency, it is non-porous and easy to clean. But there comes a time when we look for the undefinable beauty and unique appearance of natural stones such as granite, onyx, travertine, marble and quartz.

COOKING AREAS

Because of the high demands that a working kitchen makes on surfaces and walls, we look for stones that are less porous and more resistant to heat, stains, chemicals, scratches and bacteria.

Engineered stone, widely recognised for toughness as well as beauty, fits the bill beautifully for most surface tops and walls in the average commercial or busy family kitchen.

WET AREAS

Surface tops and wall linings in bathrooms, laundries and shower recesses benefit massively from the non-porous attributes that almost any type of stone offers.

Dealing with grout, mildew and scum build-up becomes a thing of the past once stone is installed. Maintenance in wet areas can simply involve wiping over properly finished stone surfaces.

BESPOKE

Our stonemasons welcome the occasions when we are asked for something special, something different.

Using their skill and ingenuity coupled with their knowledge and resources they can turn a slab of natural or engineered stone into a finely crafted masterpiece.

It is amazing what they can do with stone – from decorated fireplace surrounds to featured walls.

For more information about which stone best suits your purposes check out our FAQ page or call us about your next stone project.

When it comes to sourcing our engineered and natural stone we use only the best suppliers, both from Australia and overseas. Depending upon the potential demands of the job at hand our stonemasons carefully select for grain, colour, finish, durability, porousness and advise accordingly.

Natural Stone

Plucked from the landscape, eco-friendly natural stone comes from slabs of rock, cut and polished to fit a particular purpose.

No two stones are the same. Depending upon the rock from which it comes, natural stone offers vibrant variations in colour, texture and effect. Think of the wonderful marbling that occurs in natural quartz.

Natural stone's resistance to stains, chips and oil residues depends upon the individual stone used. Granite, for example is a particularly hardy stone.

Natural stone is ideal for surfaces where the patina of age is embraced, where the nicks and spots on a kitchen benchtop lovingly bear witness to a hardworking kitchen which has produced many delicious family meals.

Engineered Stone

Also referred to as re-constituted, re-composed or synthetic stone, engineered stone is most commonly manufactured from a quartz base.

Simply put, this process involves stone aggregate chips being held together with a resin binding agent, pigment and other additives.

Engineered quartz is rapidly taking over from granite as the popular choice for countertop material due to its high durability, resilience and toughness. Although resistant, engineered stone is not scratch, heat or stain proof.

Having a consistent aggregate base, engineered stone carries are only minor variations in colour and aggregate, making this the perfect choice where uniformity in colour, texture and finish is required.
